Calhoun students shave it all for a cause

Calhoun High School in Merrick recently held its annual St. Baldrick’s and Locks of Love fundraiser to great success, raising more than $50,000 for charities aimed at eradicating cancer and helping cancer patients.

Calhoun has sponsored the event for six straight years, and in that time, the school has raised more than $300,000.

While most of the male participants shaved their heads, many girls had lengths of their hair cut to donate to Locks of Love, which creates wigs for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Many Calhoun students also shaved their heads as an act of solidarity with a fellow student, Dean Brownsworth, who is being treated for brain cancer.
