Central seniors honored at award ceremonies

With graduation day rapidly approaching, administrators, faculty and staff at all three of Bellmore-Merrick’s high schools are preparing to bid the senior classes farewell. But before their departure, the students were recognized for their leadership, character, citizenship and academic achievements.

Students, staff and residents living throughout the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District gathered at their respective high schools on May 28 for the annual senior awards programs. Members of the Calhoun, Mepham and Kennedy high schools classes of 2014 were honored at ceremonies that district officials said paid homage to students’ dedication, contributions and commitment to their schools and community.

Students were given numerous departmental awards, ranging from business, English, family and consumer science and health to Languages Other Than English, mathematics, science and social studies.

Community service and humanitarian awards were also presented to seniors from a variety of school and community organizations. Government officials, Board of Education trustees, PTA and alumni association members and civic groups from throughout the area appeared at each building to present the awards, thanking the seniors for their volunteerism.

Dozens of memorial scholarships were also presented to honor past leaders, teachers, students and community members. Some of the awards presented to students by community and volunteer organizations also included scholarships.
