A Nassau County corrections officer from Elmont was killed in a car crash at 12:01 a.m. today while driving westbound in a green Toyota on the Southern State Parkway, between exits 19 and 20, near Peninsula Boulevard, according to New York State Police.

According to the Nassau County Sheriff Officers Association, Deputy Frank Milano, 36, was driving home from a tour of duty when his car veered off the highway and into a wooded area, and it hit a tree.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, and Milano was pronounced dead at the scene. He lived on R Street in Elmont.

According to state officer Frank Bandiero, the cause of the accident has not yet been determined. The Nassau County Police Department has not issued a release on the incident at this time.

Milano was as seven-year veteran of the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department, and worked with his fellow officers in the General Housing Security Unit of the maximum security Nassau County Correctional Center in East Meadow. He was the father of two young children.

On Dec. 14, the Sheriff Officers Association released a statement about Milano, writing that he was a "dedicated public servant, who worked one of the most dangerous and difficult jobs in law enforcement," as well as respected and admired by other officers.

"He was known for his positive attitude and warm personality," the association wrote. "Like his colleagues, Officer Milano was committed to serving and protecting the citizens of Nassau County. This was a tragic situation that took the life of a young father and dedicated law enforcement professional. His presence will be missed at home, as well as with his extended family in Nassau Corrections."

The wake for Milano will be held at the Krauss Funeral Home in Franklin Square on Dec. 15, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and Dec. 16, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The funeral will be held at St. Boniface Church in Elmont — 631 Elmont Rd. in Elmont — on Dec. 17 at 9 a.m. For more information about services for Milano, call (516)352-2080.
