Fire officials: Be sure to clear snow from hydrants

Bellmore-Merrick area fire officials are asking local residents to clear snow and ice in front of fire hydrants near their homes. In a fire emergency, every second counts, and firefighters do not want to waste time searching for a hydrant, said James Allen, chief of the North Merrick Fire Department.

"It's become a real safety issue with all the snow," said Allen.
