Freeport Public schools budget and library passes; board welcomes two new trustees

Freeport voters approved the school district’s 2019-20 budget by a vote of 986 to 293 on May 21. The Freeport Board of Education certified the votes the same night and with a round of applause from parents, teachers and staff for newcomers Maria Jordan-Awalom and Gabriela Castillo who were elected as new trustees. Jordan-Awalom received 714 votes and Castillo received 659, respectively. As new trustees they will serve for a three-year term. Former trustees Michael Pomerico and Anthony Miller did not run for their seats.
“Thank you for the support,” Trustee Ernest J. Kight said. “Congratulations to the winners on their election to the board, I look forward to working with you.”
Trustee Vilma Lancaster also mirrored similar comments to Kight and said, “the budget was very important and it passed. Our kids are really looking forward to a good year.”
Voters also approved the library budget by a vote of 981 to 236. Voters also approved Proposition Three, district wide renovation and upgrade projects expected to funding with $1.5 million from the 2009 capital reserve and $2.5 million from the 2017 reserve. Projects include updating air conditioning district wide, upgrading security, replacing windows and making other upgrades to school buildings, by a margin of 1039 to 168.
