The Town of Hempstead held a ceremony on July 3 to dedicate North Merrick's Gianelli Avenue in honor of fire patrolman Brian McCauley.

McCauley, who was remembered for his bravery volunteering at ground zero with the fire patrol in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, died in January of cancer at age 42.

He was the son of Virginia McCauley and former North Merrick Fire Department chief Terrence McCauley. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sisters Amy McCauley of North Merrick and Diane McCauley of Massapequa, and brother, T.J. McCauley of North Bellmore.
