Quick response saves victim on Bellmore train tracks

Posted

The quick actions of a good Samaritan saved the life of a man at the Bellmore train station Monday night. At around 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 11, a witness saw a man fall onto the tracks from the train platform, said Vincent Scaduto, public information officer for the Bellmore Fire Department.

The witness ran to the Bellmore Fire Department headquarters across from the station on Pettit Avenue, and an ambulance and fire medic fly car were immediately dispatched. The crew located the victim on the eastbound tracks, and firefighters reported to the west end of the tracks to stop an oncoming train. A stop order was also put in with the Long Island Rail Road to shut down power to the third rail, Scaduto said.

The victim was a 30-year old male diabetic. He is believed to have passed out and fallen off the platform, Scaduto said. Firefighters stabilized the victim and carried him down to a waiting ambulance, where he was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow. He suffered multiple fractures and lacerations.

Nassau County and Metropolitan Transportation Authority police officers were also on the scene to assist.
