Senate memorializes Merrick Pearl Harbor survivor

New York State Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr. recently passed a resolution to memorialize the life of Bill Halleran, a Pearl Harbor survivor and Merrick resident who died in December at the age of 93.

Halleran, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1939 to 1945, was aboard the USS Phoenix at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, the day of the Japanese attack.

“Bill Halleran was a very special person who loved his country and community and served them both with distinction,” said Fuschillo. “Whether it was as a member of the Navy, as an American Legion member or a volunteer fireman, Bill never hesitated to lend a helping hand to those in need. I’m pleased that the Senate paid tribute to an incredible man who leaves behind an incredible legacy.”

Halleran grew up in Floral Park, with his brothers Charlie and David. After World War II ended in 1945, Halleran was honorably discharged and returned home. He met his wife, Rose Marie, shortly after, and the two eventually settled in Merrick, where they lived for the next 64 years.

As a member of the Merrick American Legion and as a volunteer for the North Merrick Fire Department, Halleran continued to serve his community until his death. He also helped organize a Long Island chapter of a Pearl Harbor survivors' organization, and was involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Freeport.

Halleran is survived by Rose Marie; his three sons William, Frank and

Scott; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

The legislative resolution lists Halleran’s accomplishments and acknowledges his dedication to his country and his community. A copy was sent the Halleran family, and with passage of the resolution, Halleran’s accomplishments and service record will hereafter be part of the New York State Senate’s official record, said Fuschillo.
