Temple Israel in Merrick rocks the faith's liveliest holiday

Temple-goers from Bellmore and Merrick celebrated the Jewish faith’s most spirited holiday on Feb. 25, at Temple Israel of South Merrick’s Mel Polay Purim Carnival.

The annual carnival is one of the temple’s biggest draws throughout the year. Hosted by Evelyn Polay since 1996, the carnival is dedicated to her late husband, Mel.

“Evelyn is the inspiring energy behind the carnival every year,” said Curtis Izen, an event organizer. “Her husband truly loved the carnival, the games, and the overall enthusiasm.”

Purim celebrates the salvation of the Jewish people from the vizier Haman, in the ancient Persian Empire, who had designs on their destruction, the tale of which is told in the Megillah, or Biblical Book of Esther.

During the celebration, which goes for several days, there are donations made to the poor, celebratory feasts and a public reading from the megillah.

And at Temple Israel, there was more fun to be had, with carnival games and costumes galore, as well as a bouncy house, face painting and carnival-themed treats for children.

Izen said that the Mel Polay tradition incorporates activities that both children and adults will enjoy.

“This event is for the entire community to have fun and socialize,” he said. “Plenty of non-members fill the ballroom every year and it’s wonderful to have everyone come together to celebrate Purim, while seeing the attendees having such an enthusiastic time.”

Immediately after the carnival, the entertainment continued as School of Rock from Rockville Center performed. All proceeds from the carnival went to fund activities and programs put in place by Temple Israel of South Merrick.
