As she stood at the lectern in the East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School auditorium during graduation, Marissela Gomez’s remarks to her peers covered a range of topics.

She discussed being happy to be among a class of 77 graduates because it helped her get to know her peers on a personal level. She spoke about the unique strengths and accomplishments of the students. She also addressed the many obstacles they overcame en route to receiving their diplomas.

“We often consider ourselves the ‘guinea pig grade,’” Gomez said during the ceremony on June 22, referencing having to endure common core tests and trips abroad being canceled because of safety concerns among other things. “… Despite everything thrown our way, everyone found a way to prevail and flourish, regardless of how many difficulties appeared.”

Salutatorian Gabby Walsh said she too was proud to be part of a small district. She noted that she attended kindergarten with half of the graduates and got to know each person in her graduating class. She lauded the teachers and administrators for helping shape the students and delved into the many accomplishments of the senior class, including winning the Rock Rivalry Silver Cup, the many sports championships and milestones, and vast successes in music and art competitions.

Walsh also encouraged her peers to always ask questions and embrace change. “I know each and every one of you are going to succeed at whatever you choose to do,” she said. “Always remember where you came from, and always remember where you are going.”

Superintendent Lisa Ruiz also addressed the graduating class. She advised them to be empathetic and understanding of others and to try and always see things through other people’s perspectives instead of just their own.

“Expand your moral imagination to empathize with all people who are struggling,” she said. “Not just your neighbors who are struggling, but the refugee, the immigrant, the poor, the elderly, the disabled, the disadvantaged, the transgender person and in general, people who are not like you.”

Interim Principal Neil Lederer thanked the graduates for embracing him during his lone year at the helm, for complying with the rule changes he implemented and for helping him enjoy his final year in the education field.

“I believe that East Rockaway has prepared you well for these new explorations of life,” he said. “I thank you for being a tremendous class. From your greetings in the morning to our fist bumps to my private conversations with you to strive for academic excellence, you have been a joy to be associated with.”
