Democracy lives at West End School

Posted

Students at Lynbrook’s West End School experienced the democratic process first-hand when they participated in Student Council elections. Borrowing from real politics, the candidates for Student Council president, vice president, treasurer and secretary created posters with slogans such as “Leadership You Can Trust” and “For Success, Choose the Best.” All nominees presented individual speeches to the student body, outlining their qualifications and major campaign promises, which included ideas for expanding community service, environmental action, and making everyone’s voice heard. The elections were open to all fourth and fifth graders, who cast their votes through “Moodle,” the district’s online course management system. When all the votes were tallied, Rachel Valentino was elected president, Spencer Sundeberg was elected vice president, Vanessa Fay was named treasurer and Matthew Renz was named secretary.
