On July 18, the East Rockaway Fire Department, under the director of Chief Joseph Mihalich, hosted a water rescue drill in conjunction with the Atlantic Beach, Hewlett, Merrick, Oceanside, Port Washington, Rockville Centre and Wantagh fire departments.

The live, in-water scenario, simulated a boat crash with multiple victims in the water in Hewlett Bay, off the shore of the Hewlett Point Beach in Bay Park.

The event, organized by ERFD’s Water Rescue Unit co-coordinators 3rd Asst. Chief Edward Reicherter (Surf Rescue), Ex-Chief Michael Martin (Dive Search & Recovery), Rescue Squad 1st Lt. Robert Bristol (Dive Search & Recovery) and Firefighter Brian Dessart (Surf Rescue), encompassed surface rescue scenarios, along with an underwater dive.

The rescuers were faced with a variety of victims, conscious and unconscious, suffering minor to severe medical and trauma emergencies.
