High winds, rain cause damage in Lynbrook, East Rockaway

Resident clean up after violent Nor'Easter

Posted

Residents in East Rockaway and Lynbrook came out on Sunday morning to access the damage caused by high winds and driving rain during Saturday's Nor'Easter.

Trees were uprooted in many south shore communities, and there was extensive damage to vehicles and property.

Some residents were still without power in part of East Rockaway and Lynbrook, mostly due to downed power lines.

"We heard a terrible sound," said "It was very loud, very scary," said Michael Dunne, who, along with his neighbors on Grant Avenue in East Rockaway, lost power when a tree came down at about 4:30 p.m. onto a utility pole, snapping it and cutting the power off to nearby homes. "luckily, some of our neighbors have partial electricity," said his wife, Brigid. Dunne said that little fires and sparks were starting when the pole came down, and that they couldn't immmediately get through to 911 because of high call volume.

As of noon on Sunday, their power had not been restored.

The Long Island Power Authority estimated that service

to some 222,000 customers was knocked out on Saturday. But the company said power had been restored to more than half of those customers by Sunday morning.

To report a power outage or for information updates, customers are asked to call 1-800-490-0075.
