Holiday card campaign for Wounded Warriors

Lynbrook Fire Department spreads early holiday cheer

The Lynbrook Fire Department has announced a Christmas and holiday greeting card campaign for wounded soldiers who are hospitalized in Washington, D.C., and in North Carolina.

According to Ex-Captain Steve Grogan, who announced the campaign, Lynbrook firefighters who are part of the Nassau County Firefighters-Operation Wounded Warrior program are asking the school children of Lynbrook to write or draw a Christmas or holiday greeting card to one or more wounded warriors as they recuperate in military hospitals this holiday season.

“These men and women have given so much to protect us and our way of life, and cards or greetings from children can go a long way in improving their spirits as they recuperate, especially when they are not home with their families,” said Grogan. Cards completed by grown-ups who care will also be accepted, he said.

The cards will be personally given to the wounded warriors in Walter Reed/Bethesda Hospital, and at hospitals at Fort Bragg and Camp Lejuene by Lynbrook and Nassau firefighters, who will be driving down to those locations the week of December 5. Monies raised from Lynbrook’s recent Operation Wounded Warrior fundraiser on September 10, along with other monies raised by other Nassau fire departments throughout the year, will be used to purchase Christmas gifts which will also be given to the wounded in December.

Lynbrook Fire Chief Michael Hynes, who also attended the meeting, said he was sending a letter to each of the Lynbrook schools this week announcing the Christmas card campaign. The deadline to receive the cards is December 1. Cards or drawings from the children should include their name, grade and school. They can be dropped off at Village Hall during normal office hours or at Lyn Gift Shop on Atlantic Avenue. They can also be dropped off at any Lynbrook firehouse on Sunday mornings.

Besides the cards, Lynbrook firefighters are also accepting donations of socks, t-shirts, gym shorts, sweatpants, phone calling cards, and bicycle gloves or wheelchair use, and toiletries.

“We in the Lynbrook Fire Department appreciate the support of our community in supporting our efforts to improve the lives of those soldiers that will have lasting disabilities,” said Ex-Chief Kevin Bien, who chaired the Operation Wounded Warrior fundraiser in Lynbrook on Sept. 10.
