Lady Rocks off to 7-2 start

Expectations are always high for the East Rockaway’s girls’ basketball team. Anything short of a county championship is usually a disappointment, and this season is no different.

Still smarting from a loss to Oyster Bay in last season’s Nassau Class C final, the Lady Rocks are off to a solid start in 2009-10 and have their eyes on the program’s 10th county title.

With last Friday’s 46-25 win over Cold Spring Harbor, East Rockaway improved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in Conference ABC-III. Senior forward Brianna Adamczyk scored 10 points, including eight in a 20-2 first quarter to lead the offense. Adamczyk, who missed her entire junior campaign with an injury, also pulled down four rebounds. Senior guard Theresa Amabile had eight points, four assists and two steals.

Coach Karin Leary is pleased with the team’s start. “From the standpoint of wins and losses, I’m pretty happy with our record,” Leary said. “With the new conference, and having lost some seniors, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m pleased with the defense and the way we’re getting out on the fast break. It’s been nice to watch.”

The Lady Rocks got off to a fast start by winning their first four contests. In the opener, a 44-27 victory over Oceanside, they got 10 points each from seniors Leanna Degiulio and Alyssa Marinazzo.

After a lopsided win over Valley Stream South, the Lady Rocks opened conference play with a 54-42 defeat of Manhasset. Senior guard Alli Pacheco led the way with a 21-point effort. Pacheco scored 12 in an 18-7 first quarter. Amabile added 10 points.

Despite an outstanding game turned in by Degiulio, the Lady Rocks suffered a 46-36 defeat when a strong Lynbrook team came to town. Degiulio paced East Rockaway with a career-high 16 points, including a trio of three-point goals in the opening half. The Lady Rocks backcourt was outscored Lynbrook’s guards 30-13.

Before dropping a 50-47 nail biter to Roslyn, East Rockaway exacted a little revenge on Oyster Bay with a convincing 49-34 win. Amabile scored 15 points to lead the way. Senior Emily D’Archangelis added nine points and six assists. Pacheco had a career-high 23 points as East Rockaway continued its winning ways with a 60-50 decision over Plainedge. Adamczyk turned in a 15-point, seven-rebound performance.

While East Rockaway isn’t blessed with a lot of height, and rebounding is a concern, Leary likes what she has seen thus far. She praised Adamczyk’s accomplishments. “Brianna has been a great addition to the frontcourt, and has been very good on the boards,” Leary said. “We need to get better at boxing out and rebounding. We’ve got some tough games coming up with Floral Park and Carle Place, so we’ll where we stand.”
