Local charity to host golf outing benefitting sick children

The Little St. Nick Foundation is hosting its 11th annual golf outing on Oct. 2 at the Woodmere Club, at 99 Meadow Drive. Money raised will go toward the foundation, which collects toys and distributes gift bags, made by children, to children in the emergency department of local hospitals.
Raymond Mohler Jr., 19, founded the foundation, and was motivated to help others at a young age. When he was 4, he was diagnosed with a rare hip-joint disease. Though he only spent a few hours in the hospital, it made an impact on him and he said that he felt sorry for others who had to remain there. Mohler soon began collecting toys to donate to sick children and, eventually, with the help of his parents, started the foundation in 2004. Through money raised at the annual golf outing, the foundation can help even more children.
“The goal of the outing and dinner is to raise as much money as possible to enable programs for kids to help kids,” Mohler said. “Each year the event gets bigger and bigger, and this year will be bigger and better than ever.”
On June 21, Mohler celebrated the grand opening of the official headquarters for his foundation at 131 Main St. in East Rockaway. He said he hopes to expand the foundation to other cities across the country in the coming years.
The golf outing will begin with breakfast at 9 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 11 a.m. After the 18 holes are completed, a cocktail hour is scheduled for 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m. The event will also have several raffles and a silent auction.

Last year, the foundation raised more than $60,000, which benefitted the emergency gift programs for Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center in Queens and NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola. The program helped 8,000 children that visited the emergency room and inspired 300 children in the community to pack each bag.
