The Long Island Philharmonic kicks off the spring season with “Mozart and More” on Sunday, at a new venue: Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse.
The concert, at 7:30 p.m., highlights works by Mozart, Kodály, Rachmaninoff, and Rossini. The featured work is Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra in E-flat Major.
“This piece will showcase two world-class soloists and principal musicians from the Philharmonic, Erica Kiesewetter and David Creswell, our wonderful colleagues,” Music Director David Stewart Wiley said. “This is one of Mozart’s greatest works, and that is saying a lot. The middle movement in particular is among Mozart’s most beautiful utterances. This is a program where there is something for everyone to play and to hear. We look forward to sharing this great music with our audiences.”
The orchestra also performs Kodály’s energetic Dances of Galánta, Rachmaninoff’s gorgeous Vocalise, and the famous and rousing Overture to Rossini’s opera William Tell.
“The audience will enjoy this music and it will work well in this concert hall,” said Stephen Belth, the Philharmonic’s executive director. “Different halls have different dimensions to their sound and this program will complement the acoustics.”

The Philharmonic last performed at Hofstra in 2004. Currently, the orchestra plays primarily at Tilles Center and at the Staller Center at Stony Brook University, along with the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts, where “Mozart and More” will be performed on Saturday.
“Our mission is to serve all residents of Long Island, Belth said. “We can’t expect everyone to make it to Greenvale or Stony Brook. We’re trying to reach out to residents of the south shore. This is something we hope to see continue in the future.”
