Lynbrook students create Pinwheels for Peace

Posted

To commemorate the International Day of Peace, students at Lynbrook’s Waverly Park School participated in an act of art activism called Pinwheels for Peace. Every student in the school created a pinwheel, decorated with their own personal message of peace. The entire student body, who gathered around the peace pole outside of their school, placed the pinwheels around the perimeter of the lawn to create a visual statement of their commitment to the ideals of peace.

“In the context of our school’s theme, ‘Dare to Care,” Pinwheels for Peace can be a catalyst for making compassionate choices,” said art teacher Carol Henderson. “Art can broaden social awareness and encourage dialogue.”

Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project that was created to coincide with the International Day of Peace. It was conceived by two Florida art teachers to encourage their students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives.
