Outage at Bay Park Sewage Plant dumps 3 million gallons of waste into channel

Posted

Three million gallons of partially treated sewage spewed into Reynolds Channel on May 9 due to an hour-long power outage at the Bay Park Sewage Plant, according to Nassau County’s website.

Mike Martino, spokesman for the county Department of Public Works, said that a failure in the pump system, which sends cooling water to the generators, caused the plant to go offline at 11 p.m. last Thursday. The plant is currently running on generators, Martino explained, and County Executive Ed Mangano ordered that they remain in service until further notice. A report was filed with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Martino said that the county sent out an email, notifying residents about the incident. If you are not registered for these news blasts, visit the county’s website at www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/OEM/signup.html.
