PXO Games are on

Annual event to be a day of remembrance

Posted

For the sixth year , the Patrick Xavier Owens’ Games will be held at East Rockaway High School on Dec. 19, beginning at 10 a.m. The annual event, which was organized by Patrick’s brother, Alan, is in the memory of a brave young boy who died in 1997, at the age of five.

Since its inception in 2004, the PXO Games have raised $53,325 for the Associated School for Children with Down Syndrome (ACDS), which Patrick attended. All funds benefit ACDS directly and are used for supplies, such as computers, new technology and desks. Some of the money has even been used for rebuilding its new computer lab.

“Besides Patrick being my brother, this event holds a special place in my heart because its nice to help a school like ACDS,” Alan said. “They provide a unbelievable service and do great things for kids with Down Syndrome that other schools can’t. It would be great to celebrate with a record-setting amount of donations to help ACDS continue to thrive as the No. 1 school for children with Down Syndrome.”

This year’s event will be featured alongside the East Rockaway vs. Lynbrook Friendship Games and will also honor those students and alumni who have passed away from both schools in recent years.

“This year will be a very special one as we are coming together not only to raise money for ACDS, but to remember athletes and friends that have passed away over the years,” Alan said. “We are calling the day ‘A Day of Remembrance’ in which we will be honoring people from East Rockaway and Lynbrook schools.”

The PXO Games will also include an East Rockaway vs. Lynbrook alumni game and a basketball shot contest, which will give a participant an opportunity at winning $10,000. The PXO Games will be followed by a reception at Michael’s Porthole, located at 92 New Street in East Rockaway, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

“I would like to thank everybody for their support and generous donations over the years that has allowed this foundation to be so successful,” Alan said. “We look forward to seeing you at our biggest event yet.”
