Residents snowed in, dig out

Lynbrook, East Rockaway get nearly a foot of snow

Posted

Residents awoke to a virtual winter wonderland as an
overnight storm left nearly a foot of snow in our area.
Schools were closed, and many small businesses were either closed or had a late-opening. Major chain stores and banks all seemed to be open for business.
Many residents were up early, clearing their sidewalks and digging out their vehicles.

Plows were also out early, but roads were still slippery and dangerous. Officials urged anyone who did not absolutey have to be out to stay home. Check back with liherald.com for updates throughout the day.
"The plow process is going well," said Lynbrook DPW Superintendent Phil Healy."We worked on new strategies because we learned from the last storm." He explained that they try to break the village up into districts, and some districts are too large to handle. "We look at the road miles we have to cover and how trucks fit into the area and sometimes, adjustments have to be made. We are pretty good with our road modifications."
The first crews went out at 10 p.m. last night to prepare things, he said, throwing salt on the road in the very beginning to help melt snow and so the ice bands are not created. "Crews came into [heavy snow] around 1:30 a.m.," he said.
"Right now, its beautiful blue skies and sunny. The overnight hours are the most productive for plowing because there is less traffic. Few people on dead ends. We did the primary roads, secondary roads and main avenues. Pretty much, every street has been done."
Healy said that his department has 12 trucks that they can put out with small pieces of equipment. There is a mechanic who does emergency repairs on the spot [for the trucks.] "We had about 12 crews," he said, "and there are 15 to 18 people in at any given time to do shifts. Shifts are 8 to 12 hours. We want everyone to stay aware so we rotate[workers]."
"I would tell residents to enjoy the beautiful day," said Healy."We are all in the same place because we want to get you out of your house, get you to work. Also, to residents, please try not to plow snow on streets, but put it on the lawn of your house. You throw snow out and we have to put it in so try to throw it on the right side of your driveway."
