Rockin' Mules search for offense

When the 2009 season began, East Rockaway/Malverne girls’ soccer coach Joe Lores knew finding the back of the net would be a challenge. Lost to graduation was Alisha Steele, the third leading scorer in the history of the program, thus the Rockin’ Mules were left without a go-to girl to lean on.

East Rockaway/Malverne, 1-4-2 in Conference V, has been competitive in each and every game, but the dearth of firepower has plagued the team’s ability to put opponents away. “I knew we’d have trouble finding the net, but I thought there would be enough talent to score more than we have,” Lores said after the Rockin’ Mules battled unbeaten Locust Valley to a 1-1 tie last Friday. “We work hard, but we’re just not getting the results.”

Senior Brianna Adamczyk gets the lion’s share of the time in goal. Adamczyk, who had an 18-save effort against Locust Valley, spent nearly a year off the field after undergoing surgery to repair both her ACL and MCL. Adamczyk was an All-Classification selection in 2008. The defense is led by senior sweeper Emily D’Archangelis, a two-time All Conference performer. In an attempt to add a little life to the offense, Lores has given D’Archangelis, a four-year varsity player, some time at midfield. Junior Alexa Germany plays both stopper and sweeper. Joining Germany and D’Archangelis on defense are senior fullbacks Denise Ortiz and Victoria Elizondo. Also seeing time on defense are junior Sydney Johnson and senior Cynthia Avelar.

Caitlin McShane was off to superb start at midfield before suffering an injury. The senior captain’s return to play will fill a big void in the middle of the field. Senior Theresa Amabile has been one of the bright spots for East Rockaway/Malverne. Amabile leads the team with three tallies on the season. Senior Antonette McCarty has found the back of the net twice. Junior Gabriella Cuccinella had a goal in the team’s only victory, a 3-1 triumph over Glen Cove.
