Storm leaves thousands without power

Winds and rain from the storm on Wednesday night have left thousands of homes without power, according to PSEG Long Island.

As of Thursday at 4;45 p.m., the utility reported that 8,893 households out of its 1.1 million customers on Long Island and the Rockaways do not have power. So far, the utility has restored service to more than 92 percent of the 98,000 customers affected by the storm and expects to have 95 percent restored by the end of the day.

The north shore of Long Island was hit the hardest. According to PSEG, the high winds brought down trees and knocked down poles and wires, making restoration jobs more complicated. There are some outages scattered amongst the south shore of Nassau County.
