Storytime and scarecrows in East Rockaway

Public Library host autumnal event

Posted

Story time and scarecrow making kicked off the autumn season at the East Rockaway Public Library on Sept. 25.

Children talked about their favorite desserts and discussed how they help around the house and greeted guests to prepare for Thanksgiving. Mary Ann Catanzaro read “Thanksgiving Rules” by Laurie Friedman. The face painting by Donna was also a hit.

Two Rhame Avenue Elementary School students made scarecrows: Kindergartener Patrick Mielinis and third-grader Alex Cooper. Both students won the scarecrow competition and will pick up their certificate at Village Hall. Alex brought his scarecrow home, and Patrick’s scarecrow will be on display at the library before moving on to Rhame Avenue. Michaeline Abbott-Cooper said that students would be receiving pumpkins as part of Rhame Avenue’s “Pumpkin Patch” curriculum at school. The Cultural Arts Committee would like to incorporate story time with the schools curriculum next year, according to chairwoman Barbara Koshefsky.
