In front of a standing-room-only home crowd, third-seeded Elmont exploded to a 12-point lead against No. 6 Uniondale just four minutes into its Nassau Class AA boys’ basketball quarterfinal playoff matchup on Feb. 20. But the Spartans couldn’t deliver an early knockout, and it cost them.

Elmont’s defense made the biggest play of Saturday’s Nassau Conference II showdown with rival Carey, returning a fumble 100 yards for a touchdown with eight seconds remaining in the first half, but the Seahawks overcame it thanks to some defensive magic of their own.

Elmont made some noise on the soccer pitch a year ago when it hosted a playoff game for the first time in 32 years. The Spartans have carried that momentum into the 2012 season and are the team to beat in Conference AA-III.

Coming into the 2012 football season, there were a lot of uncertainties at Elmont. With a new offense, a lack of experience at quarterback, and no real go-to player, it was tough to predict how the Spartans would stack up in Conference II.

Given the way his team performed in its 3-1 Conference AA-III boys’ soccer victory at Long Beach on Sept. 20, Elmont coach Pat Corvetti wouldn’t mind playing the remainder of the season on the Marines’ beautiful turf field at the middle school.

When the 2012 high school baseball season began, the theme at Elmont was all about taking care of unfinished business. The Spartans were still smarting from a season that saw them fall a game short of the inaugural Nassau Countywide Conference title game.

A little magic on the baseball diamond at Elmont High School this spring has captured the imagination of the community. After a three-game sweep of intra-district rival Sewanhaka last week, the Spartans have an 11-1 record.

Kennedy’s defense worked feverishly to keep Elmont’s leading scorer Ben Odugbesan from being the difference in last Saturday’s Conference B-II boys’ lacrosse game, and it was mission accomplished for a group led by junior Brandon Klein.
