The Elmont Dads' Club, a group comprised of residents from the Elmont Union Free School District, held its annual “Clean Up Elmont Day” on April 21, in commemoration of Earth Day — an annual day that was observed on April 22 this year, in 175 countries worldwide.

This year’s SIDMUN event was my first; I became a member of the Model United Nations program in September, and I’ve valued and loved every second of the program ever since. Model UN gives me more than most other clubs do; I’ve gained invaluable experience and knowledge, and had the opportunity to network with dozens of other students.

The Elmont Jazz Masters program has been turning musically talented students in the Elmont Union Free School District on to blues and jazz for more than 10 years. Under the direction of Elmont music teacher Anthony Pino, the highly selective program — participating students must first be recommended by their music teachers — emphasizes improvisation and high tempos.

The legacy of Theodor Seuss Geisel, known best by his pen name, “Dr. Seuss,” was celebrated nationwide on March 2 — Seuss’s birthday. Dr. Seuss wrote and illustrated world-renowned books like “The Cat in the Hat” and “Green Eggs and Ham.”

The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education held its first 2012-13 budget workshop in February, unveiling three spending scenarios and stressing that the budget would likely exceed the 2 percent tax levy cap in order to avoid more than $3 million in cuts. Since that time, the board was notified that it would receive an unanticipated, additional $1 million in state and special education aid from prior school years, bringing the projected the tax levy increase for 2012-13 down, from 4.64 percent to roughly 4 percent.
