So much for Elmont’s growing pains. After winning their first county basketball championship in program history a season ago, the Spartans were left to start anew in 2011-12. Despite a lack of varsity experience, and a slew of underclassmen, they’re back in the Nassau Class AA hunt.

Mepham’s Kristen O’Brien joined the prestigious 1,000-point club last Thursday night with a second-quarter basket, but visiting Elmont had three players in double figures and joined the Lady Pirates in second place in Nassau Conference AA-III with a 48-32 victory.

Engaged in a defensive struggle with Wantagh in last Friday’s Nassau Conference II playoff semifinal at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium, Elmont squandered numerous second-half possessions that originated in enemy territory and saw its season end with a hard-fought 14-6 loss.

For the second straight year, Mepham traveled to Elmont to challenge the Spartans in the first round of the Nassau Conference II football playoffs. The Pirates pulled off the upset in 2010, but this time it was No. 3-seed Elmont that got the last laugh, winning 14-7.

The difference between first and seventh place in Nassau Conference AA-III boys’ soccer wasn’t as great as the standings indicated the morning of Oct 6. Two days after snapping a five-game slide, Long Beach battled from behind twice to earn a hard-fought 2-2 tie at Elmont.
