Election 2012

7th Senate District endorsement — Martins

Posted

Jack Martins has said he wants the opportunity to continue to improve the quality of life for residents of the 7th Senate District. Martins, a Republican from Mineola, has accomplished a lot for a first-term senator.

As a member of the Mandate Relief Council, he has passed bills that will allow school districts to continue to use old ballot machines for board elections, saving districts and taxpayers money. He also passed legislation to extend the validity period on LIRR tickets and fought against the MTA payroll tax.

Both Martins and his Democratic opponent, Daniel Ross, have visions for developing Belmont Park that don’t include casino gambling. Martins made sure the state budget included a stipend to explore redevelopment on the park’s south lot, and the result was the issuance of a request for proposals by the New York State Empire Development Corporation. Responses are due by Dec. 7.

To his credit, Ross seems extremely knowledgeable about the district and its residents’ concerns. As a small business manager, he is aware of the tax burden on business owners as well as residents, and says he would work to alleviate that pain. He also seems willing to compromise and work with members on both sides of the aisle to get things done.

We like Ross and hope he stays in politics, perhaps running for local office. But the Herald believes that Martins has accomplished a lot for the 7th District in a short time, and will continue to do so. As a member of the majority, he will have more influence, and no doubt continue to bring aid to the district. We urge voters to show Martins their support on Tuesday.
