Bringing the hula home

Posted

Elmont residents got a little exotic flavor last weekend, as the Elmont Library put on a show — and a class — about how to appreciate the art of hula dancing on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Hula, a dance form associated with the oral history of Hawai’i, is the art of using the whole body to tell a story.

The dances were used in Hawai’ian civilization as a way to keep traditions alive. During their demonstration on Saturday, Iolani and Maka Nani gave their audience a new appreciation for all things hula, and also gave some pointers for how people could participate in the dance themselves.
