Elmont construction under way

The Town of Hempstead began construction in May on Hempstead Turnpike, between Elmont and School roads — in coordination with the Coalition for Sustainable Development's Community Vision Plan, which was first established in 2008. Today, construction workers laid down brick pavers and painted tree grates along that section of the turnpike.

According to the town, the project is expected to be completed by the end of July. The construction is the third phase of a “triangle” streetscape project that the town has been working on for several years. In 2006, work was completed on a section of School Road, between Elmont Road and Hempstead Turnpike, and in 2008, the section of Elmont Road between School Road and Hempstead Turnpike was redeveloped.

“The community has been very, very patient,” Murray told the Herald in June. “We are spending huge amounts of energy in the Elmont community … we are really excited.”

The triangle project was funded by the town’s Community Development Block Grant, administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and cost nearly $700,000. The cost for the third phase of the project is estimated at $325,000.

In addition to the Elmont Road-School Road project, the town has approved a streetscape project for the north side of Hempstead Turnpike, between Plainfield and Hendrickson avenues — a project that would be paid for by the Community Development Block Grant — and designed a construction project for the north and south sides of Hempstead Turnpike, between Roquette and Hendrickson avenues.

Nancy Greco, a spokeswoman for the Town of Hempstead, said that the CDBG has provided $924,664 for Elmont projects since last January.

Another town project includes streetscape work and façade improvements along Hempstead Turnpike, between Holland and Savoy avenues, which will be partially paid for by the Restore 3 Grant — a $2.4 million state grant that was awarded to the town in 2010.
