Evans Ave. home catches fire

The cause of an Elmont house fire that occurred on June 29, shortly after 9 p.m., is still under investigation by the Elmont Fire Department.

Mike Capoziello, chief of the Elmont Fire Department, who was in charge of the fire at 288 Evans Ave. in Elmont, said that nearly 60 firefighters arrived on scene, including the Franklin Square & Munson Fire Department, and the fire was showing from two windows of the two-story home's first floor. At the time firefighters arrived, the fire had reached the "flash" point — when everything in the room has combusted, Capoziello explained.

Capoziello said that Elmont's Engine 703 — whose firehouse is on Meacham and Scimitar avenues, only a block from the home — was on scene within four minutes, after a 9:26 p.m. call to the department. A mother and three children were able to escape from the house on their own, he added, and no injuries were reported.

Capoziello said that the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office is currently investigating the fire, but it could have been electrical. "The fire had nothing to do with summer or weather," he added.

Since June, Capoziello said, this is the only serious fire in Elmont. The total number of fires in Elmont from May to August, over the past 10 years, is 59 — similar to the number of fires that have occurred during other seasons, over the past 10 years, in Elmont, he added.
