‘Good things’ come from article on day laborers

Posted

To the Editor:

Regarding Scott Brinton’s article “Where day laborers get their fair shake” (Sept. 23-29, see Related Items below):

I just wanted to keep you posted on some of the good things that have happened since the article on the Freeport Trailer Hiring Site hit newsstands:

- Bob Levine of WL Concepts, a local graphics company, is replacing our faded signs.

- Daniel Miklos of the Garden City law firm Silberstein, Awad & Miklos visited the trailer as I was discussing much-needed repairs with several of the day laborers, and he later dropped off a check for $2,000 to cover the cost of those repairs.

- Several people have dropped off clothes and food donations.

- Several contractors have been in to pick up workers after learning of our existence.

- And a very nice, retired gentleman has visited and plans to return to help with English classes.

Thank you again for the article. I will keep you posted on any new developments.
