Heavy rains cause flash flood warning across Nassau County

New York state Gov. Kathy Hochul has issued a state of emergency for Long Island as heavy rain is causing flooding in several areas.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning through 6:15 p.m. tonight. Communities highlighted for flash flooding include Freeport, Valley Stream, Long Beach, Glen Cove, Lynbrook, Woodmere, Rockaway and Oyster Bay.

“I’m directing state agencies to prepare response assets and be ready to assist our partners at the local level if they need support,” Hochul said in a news release.  “I encourage anyone expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours to stay vigilant, keep a close eye on the forecast, and heed any emergency orders from officials if necessary.”

Residents in Franklin Square have reported flooding on Hempstead Turnpike, Lincoln Road and Cherry Valley Avenue. In Elmont, flooding has been reported on Fallon Avenue, Elmont Road and on Exit 30 of the Cross Island Parkway.

The state transportation department continues to monitor flood conditions in the state. On the Southern State Parkway headed westbound near the Cross Island Parkway and Belt Parkway interchange, the left and center lanes are flooded. The state transportation department is on site.

The NWS NY’s twitter page noted to never drive through flooded roads and to “Turn Around Don’t Drown.” They also mentioned that 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock over and carry away an adult and 12 inches of fast-moving water can carry away a small car.

The NWS forecasted 3-5 inches of rain with localized amounts greater than 5-7 inches. Rainfall rates may reach an inch to two inches per hour. With the ground already saturated from last weekend’s rain event, there is an increased threat of flash flooding across the area.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman advised that consideration should be given to cancelling activities that require pedestrian or vehicle movements, especially on the North and South shores of Nassau County and low lying areas until Saturday afternoon.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority is reporting system-wide disruptions because of the heavy rainfall and is advising that people remain at home if travel unnecessary.
