A man died in a house fire in Elmont on Feb. 4 at 12:16 a.m. The arriving units, which were Fifth Precinct officers and the Elmont Fire Department, found that the entire house, 1560 Dutch Broadway, had caught on fire.

The house, located on the north side of Dutch Broadway just east of Russell Avenue, had fire in the basement, first and second floors of the home. Inside the home at the time of the fire was a 31-year-old man, who was able to escape the home after unsuccessfully attempting to reach his father, a 70-year-old man trapped inside the second floor bedroom.

Firefighters were able to reach the upstairs bedroom, locate the elder unconscious man and bring him outside where CPR was initiated. He was extricated from the home in cardiac arrest and died from his injuries at a local hospital.

One firefighter from the Elmont Fire Department was transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor burns to his upper legs. The 31-year-old was also transported to an area hospital suffering from minor smoke inhalation. The deceased man's name is being withheld at this time.

Elmont Fire Company Chief Dailey and Assistant Chief Falco were on the scene, along with Commissioners Esposito, Hrbek and Bohnet. Elmont was assisted at the scene by units from Valley Stream, Lakeview, West Hempstead and Franklin Square/Munson Fire Departments.

The Nassau County Fire Marshals continue investigating the cause and origin of the fire, which as of press time, is deemed non-suspicious in nature.
