Red Cross offers free smoke alarms

On Saturday, April 9, as part of fire safety initiative, more than a dozen Red Cross volunteer teams will canvass homes in the Town of Hempstead to install free smoke alarms in homes that do not have working devices.

Any resident interested in having a smoke alarm installed in their home should contact Joe Spaccarelli at the Red Cross through his email address — joe.spaccarelli@redcross.org — or phone: 516-229-1086 or visit www.redcross.org/lifiresafety.

Residents will also learn about fire safety from trained volunteers. Smoke alarm installations will occur between 10:30-12:30 p.m.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, the risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half when there’s a working smoke alarm present.
