Stewart Manor students take on yoga

Stewart Manor School students from third to sixth grade had an opportunity to work out with a certified yoga instructor, thanks to the school’s PTA.

The yoga instruction was provided to students in the school’s gymnasium under the direction of Dena Vigilis, a teacher from Yoga Life, a studio located in Port Washington. Vigilis had students sit in a large circle that she called a “Circle of Respect.” She spoke about respect for the body, respect for the mind, respect for one another and the world around them.

Students attentively listened to every word spoken. Vigilis continued to speak about the importance of one’s posture and how it affects the breath. Various relaxation techniques were taught. Vigilis also demonstrated yoga poses such as the “Eagle,” a balance pose that promotes concentration and focus. “Sun Salutation” and “Down Dog” stretched and strengthened student’s bodies. The session ended with a one-minute meditation where students counted the breaths taken while soothing music played quietly in the background.

“Learning to breath is a life skill,” Vigilis said. “When someone is under stress, their body tightens and contracts, but by breathing correctly it change the way they feel.”

Stewart Manor Assistant Principal Michele Sajecki shared her love of yoga with students prior to the class. She also explained why yoga is beneficial to students.

“Yoga is a wonderful way for children to develop their physical strength, flexibility, concentration and focus,” Sajecki said. “It can also promote self-respect and equip children with the tools to better face life’s challenges. We are thankful to our PTA for providing our children with the experience of yoga.”
