Truck overturns in Elmont

Tractor trailer carrying debris from Elmont house explosion flips on its side

Posted

A tractor trailer that was removing debris from the home explosion at 150 Lincoln St. in Elmont — which occurred three days earlier — was flipped on its side on Sept. 9, at 1:10 p.m.

The driver of the truck — a contractor working for the town — was stuck in the truck, until a member of the Town of Hempstead Building Department pulled him out of the vehicle. The driver was then transported to Winthrop Hospital in Mineola by a Nassau County police ambulance for minor back and leg injuries. The Nassau County Police and Elmont Fire departments both responded to the accident.

Police said that the truck tipped over because workers loaded the vehicle with debris improperly.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal Hazardous Materials team responded to control and clean up a diesel fuel spill from a saddle tank on the truck, which ruptured and spilled several gallons onto the road way. As the truck flipped over, it fell onto various Long Island Power Authority electrical and Verizon phone wires, ripping them from utility poles and homes. LIPA is currently working to repair the lines.

Lincoln Street was closed for several hours between Atherton Avenue to Estelle Avenue by police until the fuel spill, wires and truck were all removed from the area.

The house explosion occurred around 1:37 a.m. on Sept. 6, leveling a home and causing damage to neighboring homes on the block.

Three firemen sustained injuries while responding to the explosion, which completely destroyed the home at 150 Lincoln St. and damaged two homes nearby.
