I’m 26, and have lived virtually my whole life in Hempstead. I’ve seen a lot of health-related issues — low-income people of color, like me, suffering from chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and untreated mental illness. Often they haven’t been able to receive proper treatment for their conditions. I wanted to do something about it, and soon I will be able to, because I’m on my way to becoming a doctor. more

New York state’s recent mandate to electrify all school buses is a fantasyland, progressive step toward a not-so-green future. Beneath the surface, there are glaring issues that threaten the feasibility of this ambitious initiative. While the intentions seem commendable, the lack of infrastructure, exorbitant costs, and practical challenges in certain regions cast a shadow over the state’s commitment to a cleaner environment. more

Demolition of Belmont Park's 1.25 million-square-feet grandstand and clubhouse is expected to begin in March and continue through early July. It will be replaced with a roughly 275,000-square-feet building, which increases the amount of unstructured green space available to fans by reducing the overall footprint of the building. more
Community members celebrated the Elmont Memorial Library board’s unanimous vote to reinstate early voting at the facility at a board meeting on Feb. 22. In January, residents were outraged at the board’s decision to discontinue hosting early voting at the library, based on alleged “safety concerns” that arose during electioneering in the run-up to last fall’s election, when early voting took place between Oct. 28 and Nov. 5. more
Franklin Square residents can honor their local heroes during this year’s Franklin Square Civic Association Hometown Hero Banner Program. Banners can honor a local hero who has either served in the military, as a first responder or healthcare worker through the program. more
