First settled in the 1600s, Franklin Square developed as a German-speaking farming community in the late 1800s. In 1650, Christopher and Thomas Foster purchased a large plot of land — including what is now Franklin Square, Elmont and several other surrounding communities — from Dutch settlers, and named it “Fosters Meadow." During the Franklin Square Public Libary’s board of trustees meeting on Tuesday, March 29, at 7 p.m., Rita Temperino and Bill Youngfert, the incumbent who is running for re-election, addressed the library’s board of trustees and members of the public, about why they should be elected for the soon-to-be-available trustee position. For some time, the Franklin Square Public Library has been using florescent lights, turning off computers at night and generally trying to respond to a Long Island Power Authority energy audit, but it has recently gone a step further. Now the library can actually generate energy via solar panels that were installed on the building’s roof in the fall. On Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m., the library unveiled its monitoring station, which will allow patrons to see how much energy is being generated by the solar panels in real-time reporting. more
