H. Frank Carey High School students Pui Lam Cheng, Michael Gallagher and Michelle Nilson teamed together to participate in the Kids Creating Community Content Videoconferencing Competition and won second place in the New High School Division. The competition was held through the 21st Century Scholars Program at Carey.

The students, advised by school librarian Karen Annunziata, created an original program titled “Surviving Hurricane Sandy — Our Message,” and were involved in every phase of creation, research and broadcast. The students connected via videoconferencing with a class from Texas and shared their story about the wrath of Hurricane Sandy as experienced on Long Island. The program contained interviews from a first responder, a hero and secondary responder, gave examples and showed pictures of pre-destruction and post-destruction and also presented a message about global warming. The tour was executed by videoconferencing from Carey High.

The competition gathered judges from across the United States to evaluate student programs by highlighting their research, knowledge of content, strategies of presentation, engagement of audience and creativity.

The competition was sponsored by the Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration.
