Community gathers for Elmont fall festival

The rain didn’t stop community members from having a day of fun at the Elmont Memorial Library last Saturday.

Neighbors all ages, from adults, to teens and younger children, gathered to take part in crafts and other fun activities on Oct. 14.

People were welcome to get their faces painted, participate in raffles and more during the festivities. Some children even tried their luck with a bottle ring toss.

“It’s a really nice event for our community,” Library Director Jean Simpson said.

The musical group New York Exceptions performed for a crowd at the library. Free cotton candy and popcorn were served to fall festival attendees while supplies lasted.

Twenty-five different vendors from Elmont registered to take part in the event to advertise services and get to know the community a bit more.

“People have businesses and they’re able to talk to people and tell them a little bit about what the offer and it’s really just a nice community, feel-good event, where the library offers a fun time for all ages,” Simpson said.

Local organizations like the Elmont Fire Department came out to interact with the community during the event. Kids received fireman’s helmets at the library.

The event usually welcomes between 2,000-3,000 people each year, Simpson said. Sonya Jones, fall festival coordinator, said the event is a way the library can promote its services throughout Elmont.

“There are so many people that use our library outside of the community,” Simpson said. “We are such a vibrant, diverse library and we’re lucky to have this theater and so many different programs. So, people from other surrounding towns come to the Elmont Library and we want to welcome them as well.”

People were able to sign up for library cards at the event, with some entered into a raffle. Throughout the year, the Elmont library offers community service opportunities, theatrical performances, public information sessions and more.
