Arcadia/Suburbia: Architecture on Long Island, 1930-2010
The exhibit examines the impressive architectural history of Long Island, especially on the North Shore. It underscores the role Long Island played in the development of Modernist and Post-Modernist movements in the U.S. and charts the region’s development from a largely agrarian society and leisure destination to a “mature” suburban culture. Projects by such leading architects as Frank Lloyd Wright, Philip Johnson, Marcel Breuer, Jose Luis Sert, John Hejduk, Edward Durrell Stone, Paul Rudolph, Robert Venturi, and Charles Moore are included. Children’s Pleasures: American Celebrations of Childhood
Depictions of American childhood pleasures and pastimes from the early 19th century to the present are on display. The exhibit features approximately 50 works by 41 artists, dating from 1836 to 2008. Artists include Elizabeth Catlett, William Merritt Chase, Asher B. Durand, George Luks, Norman Rockwell, and Philemona Williamson, with works in a variety of media (paintings, prints, and sculpture). Fernando Botero
This major exhibition showcases one of the most honored Latin American artists working today. Paintings, drawings and monumental sculpture that exemplify Botero’s most familiar themes are on view. Five Centuries Of Art: Selections From The Permanent Collection
An exhibit that spans the breadth of Heckscher Museum’s Permanent Collection of paintings. Photo Competition
The Long Island Center of Photography is sponsoring its fourth annual photo competition. All photographers, amateur and professional, are invited to submit their most current work for consideration. All types of photography, from traditional to new media, are accepted. The submission deadline is June 30. Entries will be judged by Bob Shamis, distinguished photographer, consultant, and past curator of Prints and Photographs for the Museum of the City of New York. Winning photos will be exhibited at the African American Museum in Hempstead. Awards and prizes will be presented at an artist’s reception on Sept. 12.
