More than 100 local residents cycled through The Shop in Elmont on Dec. 12 for "Haircuts for Elmont Firefighter Richard Schriefer," a fundraiser for a Franklin Square resident and ex-chief of the Elmont Fire Department. Hundreds of dollars were raised during the event for Schriefer, 37, who has been battling brain cancer since it was diagnosed in July.

"It feels great to do something for Rich, his family," said Carl Achille, co-owner of The Shop, located at 1301 Hempstead Turnpike. "Our first responders are always there when we need them, so it's great to be able to step up to the plate, and do the right thing when they need us."

Schriefer and his wife, Andrea, have been married for nearly five years and have two children, Leah, 4, and Rachel, 2. He has volunteered at the Elmont Fire Department for nearly 20 years. He has worked through the ranks at the EFD, serving as lieutenant and captain of the Belmont Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1, and the department’s third, second and first assistant chief. In 2008, he was named chief of the department.

Attendees included Assemblyman Ed Ra, newly elected Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (3rd L.D.), Elmont East End Civic Association President Pat Nicolosi, Argo Civic Association President Mimi Pierre-Johnson and local firefighters, police officers, EMS workers. Participants enjoyed raffle prizes sponsored by The Shop, Enterprise Pawn and the Stop 20 diner. Hook Ent performed as a DJ, and food was catered by Joe's Meals on Wheels.

According to Achille, the fundraiser was held to ensure that Schriefer, his wife and two young daughters have a merry Christmas and holiday season.
