More than one day of fighting hunger

Posted

Thanksgiving has passed, but the time to give has not.

Throughout November, volunteers and donors across Nassau County worked hard to ensure that people in need would not go hungry for Thanksgiving.

But the number of people who need more than one good meal is increasing, and with the December holiday season upon us, food pantries and service organizations can always use the assistance. While we all think of the season as one of gift-giving, we must remember that some of the most important gifts come in the form of food, with hunger an everyday reality that many of our neighbors and loved ones face.

According to Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, there has been a 10 percent drop in annual donations, which is unacceptable in a time of steadily rising unemployment.

Any contribution helps, even if it’s a single can of vegetables. To find out how to pitch in, call your local house of worship, school district or community service organizations.

Island Harvest is actively seeking donations of frozen turkeys, supermarket turkey coupons, and gift cards, cash or nonperishable food items. To find an Island Harvest food drive near you or to contribute
