On Stage

Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde
Moises Kaufman’s drama, presented by Nassau Community College’s Department of Theatre and Dance, chronicles Oscar Wilde’s real-world trial for “gross indecency” that captured the attention of Victorian society. Wilde, considered the greatest playwright and humorist of 19th-century London, faced three court trials stemming from a relationship with the handsome and much younger Lord Alfred Douglas, which led to his being charged with criminal acts of homosexuality. Drawing from real-life trial transcripts and Wilde’s words, the play looks at the eternal battle between art and morality while emphasizing the way that the powers-that-be try to exercise control over people’s private lives.
Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 4-6, 8 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 7, 3 p.m. $9, $7 seniors. Nassau Community College’s Mainstage Theatre, Garden City. (516) 572-7676.
