South Side rallies past Carey

While South Side failed to produce a shot in the first half at Carey and trailed a Nassau Conference B-I boys’ lacrosse matchup by three goals with less than a minute left in the third quarter, senior goalie Dominic Moriarty kept the Cyclones within striking distance.

And they struck often in the fourth quarter.

Six different players scored over the final 12:49 as South Side extended its conference winning streak to 29 games with a 6-3 come-from-behind victory April 13. Moriarty made 15 saves, including nine in the first half, and senior Kevin Waxon netted the game-winner off a nifty pass from sophomore Stephen Tita with 3:50 to go.

“This is the second time we came out flat and dug a hole,” said junior Zach Scaduto, who scored South Side’s second goal. “We didn’t play our game at all in the first half, but we showed how we can play in the fourth quarter. Once we get that momentum going, we’re hard to stop.”

The Cyclones (5-2 overall), who erased a four-goal deficit to beat Hewlett 8-7 in overtime on April 1, didn’t force Carey sophomore goalie Nick Fasano to make a save until two minutes into the third quarter. Fasano faced a dozen shots in the second half and stopped six.

“I sensed during warm-ups we were lacking intensity,” South Side coach Steve DiPietro said. “With the exception of Dom in goal, everyone was just going through the motions in the first half. I knew if the deficit got worse, we’d be in big trouble.”

The Seahawks (4-3) led 56 seconds into the game on a man-up goal by junior Peter Nicholls, who converted a pass from junior Mike Locicero. Freshman Matt Robinson then set up a Locicero goal at 4:22, and senior Matt Oswald made it 3-0 at 7:40 off a feed from senior Mike Dzibuela.

DiPietro burned a timeout after Oswald’s goal, but the Cyclones couldn’t penetrate Carey’s senior-led defense consisting of Giuliano Bove, Drew Zahradka and Craig Samson. The Seahawks kept Moriarty busy in the meantime, but couldn’t pad the lead.
