While the action this weekend is centered under the Big Top at Nassau Coliseum, young fans of the circus will be drawn to the “little top” nearby at Hofstra University.
The National Circus Project is visiting Hofstra on Sunday, March 21, with performances and workshops that bring circus entertainment up-close to area families. In fact, the Westbury-based organization is already familiar to many through the programs and workshops it presents at local schools.
Sunday’s event provide an opportunity for everyone to experience the circus’ unique cultural traditions and enjoyable antics in a more intimate setting than the usual circus spectacle. Five performers will showcase variety of skills and comedy, with plenty of audience interaction, during two shows on Sunday, 11 a.m.-noon and 2-3 p.m.
These world-class artists reflect the international appeal of the circus; shows have often included performers from England, Japan, Puerto Rico, Russia, Latvia, and China. Each performance features “a little bit of everything,” according to Bob Spiotto, executive producer of Hofstra Entertainment. The performers will demonstrate everyone’s favorite circus skills, along with some comedy and magic routines.
“We’re very excited about this program,” said Spiotto. “It’s sure to be fun for everyone since the circus is something all ages can enjoy. In fact, many parents are already aware of them [the National Circus Project] because they’re so involved with the schools around Nassau County.”

After each show, families can step outside and into the “little top tent” for some lessons in the circus arts. The National Circus Project’s interactive workshops are a thoroughly hands-on experience. Participants practice traditional circus skills, including juggling, plate spinning, devil sticks, and balancing. A “surprise” trick will be added at the end.
Parents will enjoy seeing the children “perform” and, according to Spiotto, “I wouldn’t be surprised if an adult or two would want to join in. The circus brings out the child in all of us.”
When: Sunday, March 21, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Each performance is followed by a 45 minute workshop. $15 adults, $10 seniors, $10 children 18 and younger.
