Snowstorm update in Freeport

Posted

Freeporters successfully endured Monday’s heavy snowfall despite predictions of blizzard conditions and moderate to heavy flooding in the southern part of town. More than 18 inches of snow had fallen by 10 a.m. this morning, Tuesday, Jan 27.

The Village Department of Public Works had thirty vehicles on Village roads, beginning last evening and worked through the night to clear the streets. A 911 reverse call was sent to all residents to advise them of conditions. Freeport Electric Department was also ready with extra lineman on call to handle any downed lines or trees.

The Police Department was fully staffed and the office of emergency management, staffed with village employees from each department, had set up a hotline to route calls and handle emergencies throughout the night.

“Everything went smoothly,” Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy said. “There were no fires and little flooding.” A coastal flood watch had been issued overnight that indicated a tidal departure of as much as three feet above normal tide.

But all’s well that ends well. The Office of Emergency Management closed this morning. Village Hall is open. Residents may call the appropriate department if there is problem.

Meanwhile DPW will continue to plow the streets “from curb to curb,” Kennedy said. Residents are being asked to keep vehicles off the streets as plowing will continue until 4 p.m. today, Tuesday, Jan 27. “We’ll give them a break and then send them back on the streets around midnight,” Kennedy explained.
