Third-grade students at Bayview Avenue Elementary School in the Freeport School District recently engaged with educators from Hofstra University Museum of Art, Sara Schaeffer and Eileen McKenna, in an exciting preparation for their upcoming inaugural visit to the university’s museum. This initiative also marked the beginning of their participation in a unique arts program set to enrich their academic year.

During this engaging session, these young learners embarked on a captivating journey through time, equipped with art journals and magnifying glasses to delve into the world of various artifacts. With the guidance of their knowledgeable art educators, Sara Schaeffer and Eileen McKenna, the students delved into the concept that artifacts are man-made objects that serve as windows to life in times long past.

One particularly intriguing moment during the preparation involved the students closely examining antique toasters. Their mission was to decipher the purpose and origin of these intriguing artifacts. Collaborating with their peers, they meticulously recorded their observations and reflections in their art journals.

The reveal was nothing short of astonishing - these young scholars discovered that the enigmatic objects were, in fact, toasters, unlike any they had ever seen in their own homes. Their inquisitive minds were filled with wonder and amazement at the thought of toasters from a bygone era.

This thought-provoking introduction to the program promises to enhance the students’ museum experience, making it more memorable and meaningful. These young art enthusiasts are now well-prepared to explore the museum’s treasures and actively participate in additional programs throughout the academic year.
