In an educational initiative spanning the Freeport School District, students delved into the rich history and cultural significance of Diwali, a prominent religious festival observed in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness.

At New Visions Elementary School, young learners engaged in a multifaceted exploration of Diwali. They adorned the school with a vibrant bulletin board, crafted lanterns and postcards, and immersed themselves in enlightening read-aloud sessions elucidating the festival’s profound meaning. Additionally, students showcased their artistic talents in the creation of diyas or lamps during art class, with the finished pieces prominently displayed in the school’s lobby.

Archer Street School witnessed students fashioning clay diyas, diligently painting and embellishing them while absorbing the cultural nuances of the Diwali celebration. The festival spirit extended to J.W. Dodd Middle School, where students not only imbibed the significance of various Diwali traditions but also extended the festive cheer by distributing treats and informative infographics to their peers upon arrival. The school’s lobby was transformed into a festive haven adorned with banners, signs, and radiant lights.

Meanwhile, at Freeport High School, Diwali found its way into social studies classes. Students actively participated in lessons designed to unravel the historical and cultural underpinnings of the Diwali holiday, contributing to a broader understanding of this significant cultural celebration across the district.
